Mangrove Nature Reserve

The Mangrove Nature Reserve is the only marine and coastal protected area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Located along the Atlantic coast near Muanda, at the mouth of the Congo River, the reserve protects vital mangrove ecosystems that are essential for marine biodiversity, fisheries, and coastal protection. These mangroves form a natural barrier between land and sea, supporting both terrestrial and marine life while playing a crucial role in climate resilience and carbon sequestration. The reserve is critical for protection of DRC's only marine ecosystem, nursery grounds for fish, crustaceans, and marine species, coastal erosion control and storm protection, carbon storage and climate mitigation, and sustaining local fishing communities. Mangroves are among the most carbon-efficient ecosystems on Earth, making this reserve strategically important at a global level.
