Congolese rumba is inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is also, on any given weekend, simply what Kinshasa dances to.

A rumba night sets that in an elegant room: a live band, a curated selection of classic and contemporary Congolese music, a short dance lesson for anyone who wants one, and someone who can tell you where the sound came from and how it travelled across the continent and the Atlantic.

Come to dance or come to listen. Both are correct.

    Cultural and social significance

Rumba carried Congolese identity through independence, migration and reinvention, and shaped popular music far beyond Central Africa. Presenting it with its history intact — naming styles, eras and regions — is part of how the Social Club treats culture.
