The Gungu Total Game Reserve is a highly protected wildlife conservation area located in Kwilu Province, western Democratic Republic of the Congo. Designated as a Total Game Reserve, Gungu benefits from a strict protection regime aimed at preserving wildlife populations, habitats, and ecological processes with minimal human disturbance. This reserve represents an essential component of the western Congo conservation landscape, safeguarding savanna–forest transition ecosystems that are increasingly rare and vulnerable. Gungu is vital for strict wildlife and habitat protection, preservation of forest–savanna transition ecosystems, watershed protection for rivers feeding the Kwilu basin, and carbon storage and climate resilience through intact natural landscapes.
