Administrative Context
Gbadolite was the birthplace and presidential retreat of Mobutu Sese Seko, who transformed the small equatorial town into a lavish complex known as 'the Versailles of the jungle', with three palaces, a Concorde-capable airport, and a Chinese pagoda. Today the ruins are one of the DRC's most striking dark-tourism heritage sites.
