The Great Lakes of the DRC
Four of Africa's most significant rift lakes border the DRC: Lake Kivu, Lake Tanganyika (the world's second-deepest), Lake Albert and Lake Edward. Together they form one of the most biologically distinctive freshwater regions on Earth.
Where to Start
Most travellers begin in Goma on Lake Kivu, then add Idjwi Island or Tchegera Island. From the south, Lubumbashi opens access to Lake Tanganyika.
Combine With Wildlife
The Great Lakes pair naturally with Virunga National Park for gorilla trekking, and with eastern Congo's volcano landscapes. Begin in the trip planner.
