Luama Katanga

Luama Katanga is a uniquely classified protected area in southern DRC, officially recognized under a dual legal status as both a Hunting Domain and a Nature Reserve. Located within the Katanga plateau, the area protects a vast mosaic of miombo woodland and savanna ecosystems associated with the Luama River basin. This mixed classification reflects Luama Katanga's historical role in regulated wildlife management alongside its growing importance for strict biodiversity conservation and habitat protection. The site represents a transitional conservation model, bridging legacy hunting-domain frameworks with modern protected-area governance. It is important for conservation of Katanga miombo ecosystems (among Africa's most threatened woodlands), protection of wildlife populations in southern DRC, maintenance of riverine and wetland systems, ecological connectivity between southern Congo conservation landscapes, and climate regulation and carbon storage through miombo forests.
