Across approximately 430 square kilometres, researchers have documented 117 rock-art sites containing more than 5,700 painted and engraved images. These include geometric symbols, crosses, circles, animals, human figures and unusual composite representations. Lovo’s rock art provides important evidence for understanding the artistic and symbolic traditions of communities associated with the historical Kingdom of Kongo. Archaeological and historical research has explored possible connections between some paintings and initiation traditions, including Kimpasi and Santu. Certain motifs may relate to older cosmological ideas, while others reflect contact between Kongo religious traditions and Christianity. The precise meanings of many paintings remain uncertain. Our interpretation respects this uncertainty and draws on archaeology, published research and appropriately shared local knowledge.
