    Overview

Conquer Mount Kahuzi (3,308m), the dormant volcano that gives Kahuzi-Biega National Park its name. This challenging day hike or overnight expedition rewards climbers with panoramic views stretching across the Albertine Rift, Lake Kivu, and the endless green canopy of eastern Congo's montane forests. Starting from the park's highland sector at approximately 2,200m, the trail ascends through some of Africa's most biodiverse montane ecosystems. You'll pass through dense bamboo forest—home to Grauer's gorillas—before emerging into high-altitude heath and finally the rocky summit zone. On clear days, you can see Mount Nyiragongo's smoke plume to the north and Rwanda's volcanoes to the east. This expedition offers a perfect complement to gorilla trekking, allowing visitors to experience Kahuzi-Biega's landscapes from above while supporting the park through diversified tourism activities.

    Conservation & Community Impact

Mount Kahuzi climbing contributes to Kahuzi-Biega National Park's overall budget, helping to protect one of the last homes of the endangered Grauer's gorilla. Your participation supports: • Ranger patrols throughout the park's highland sector • Trail maintenance and visitor safety infrastructure • Anti-poaching operations in remote areas • Community engagement with villages around the park • Scientific research on high-altitude ecosystems • Youth employment as porters and assistant guides By choosing Mount Kahuzi alongside or instead of gorilla trekking, you help diversify the park's tourism economy—reducing pressure on gorilla groups while still contributing essential conservation revenue.
