Sud-Kivu occupies the southeastern corner of DRC, stretching along the western shore of Lake Kivu and south toward Lake Tanganyika. The province is defined by the dramatic Albertine Rift topography, with highlands rising to over 3,300m at the peaks of Mount Kahuzi (3,308m) and Mount Biega (2,790m). Bukavu, the provincial capital, sits at the southern end of Lake Kivu where the Ruzizi River exits toward Lake Tanganyika.
