    Nord-Kivu lies in the extreme eastern DRC along the Albertine Rift, bordered by Uganda to the north and Rwanda to the southeast. The province encompasses the dramatic volcanic Virunga Mountains, the shores of Lake Kivu, and extends into the western escarpment of the East African Rift Valley. Goma, the provincial capital, sits on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, in the shadow of the Nyiragongo volcano.
