When to Visit the DRC: Month-by-Month Weather and Wildlife Calendar
The DRC straddles the equator with two distinct dry seasons — but different activities peak at different times. Here's your complete planning guide.
Dry Seasons (Best for Most Activities)
June–August and December–February are the primary dry seasons. Trails are drier, visibility is better, and wildlife is easier to spot at water sources.
Wet Seasons
March–May and September–November bring heavy rainfall. Vegetation is lush and green, there are fewer tourists, and some operators offer reduced rates. Gorilla trekking is still possible but trails are more challenging.
Activity-Specific Guidance
- Gorilla Trekking — year-round, but dry seasons offer easier trail conditions. Read our gorilla trekking guide
- Nyiragongo Volcano — dry season strongly recommended for safety and visibility
- Congo River Expeditions — wet season for high water spectacle; dry season for calmer navigation
