Why Visit Bunkeya – Ancestral Capital of King Msiri

Bunkeya is one of the most important pre-colonial heritage sites in southern Democratic Republic of Congo. It is the ancestral capital of the Yeke Kingdom and the historical seat of Msiri, one of Central Africa's most powerful and influential kings of the 19th century. Before colonial borders reshaped the region, Bunkeya was a major political, cultural, and trade center, connecting Central, Southern, and Eastern Africa. Today, it stands as a sacred place of royal memory, ancestral authority, and living tradition. King Msiri ruled a vast kingdom built on strategic control of regional trade routes, diplomatic and military alliances, early copper and mineral exchange networks, and strong systems of governance and royal authority. Bunkeya was the political and spiritual heart of this kingdom.
